Sinmara are a band from Iceland that plays a very chaotic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album 'Hvisl Stjarmanna" which will be released in March by Van Records.
Atmospheric soundscapes start off the album before going into more of a dark and heavier direction while the riffs also use a decent amount of melody. Most of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very dark and melodic style while the faster sections of the songs also use a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. Vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams along with the music also adding in some dissonant structures at times.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Most of the music also brings in more of a modern style of black metal while also being very heavily influenced by the classic Scandinavian style. Clean playing and synths can also be heard briefly along with the main focus being more on a heavier direction. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Icelandic and English and cover myths relating to sirens, ghosts and malevolent spirits beckoning from beyond.
In my opinion Sinmara are a very chaotic and melodic sounding black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mephitic Haze" and "Hvisl Stjarmanna". 8 out of 10.
