Gruft are a duo from Australia that plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of their 2018 demo "Torture Of Rats" which was released on cassette by Convictus Tapes.
A very distorted and noisy sound starts off the demo before adding in some heavy riffing while the tremolo picking also gives the songs more of a raw feeling while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the faster sections of the songs also bringing in a great amount of blast beats.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's era along with the solos and leads also being done in a very raw and chaotic style which also adds in a small amount of melody on the second track as well as some of the songs being long and epic in length and a small amount of chants can also be heard on the closing song.
Gruft plays a style of black metal that is very raw, chaotic and aggressive in the 90's style, the production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi while the lyrics cover dark and violent themes.
In my opinion Gruft are a very great sounding raw black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Blood Song". 8/5 out of 10.
