Meka are a band from Toledo, Ohio that plays a very filthy, noisy and aggressive style of blackened metal and this is a review of their 2019 ep "Ending My Life To Destroy Yours" which will be released in February by Redefining Darkness Records.
A very dark yet heavy sound starts off the album while the riffs also add in some dark sounding melodies and dissonant structures at times. Vocals are mostly black metal screams along with some death metal growls also being used quite a bit in the 3 songs. Blast beats are also brought into the faster sections of the songs.
When tremolo picking is utilized it gives the music more of a raw feeling while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Crust and d beat elements are also added into some of the mid tempo sections of the songs along with the music also capturing the raw aggression of grindcore at times.
A couple of the songs are long and epic in length going over the 6 minute time frame as well as the distorted amp effects giving the music more of a noisy style while the music brings in a very dark yet modern style and the closing track also adds in a small amount of melodic guitar leads. The production gives the songs more of a dark yet very powerful and professional sound along with the lyrics focusing more on a war oriented and violent direction.
In my opinion Meka are a very great sounding blackened metal band which captures the modern style of American blackened death metal and the raw aggression of Norwegian black metal and if you are into both of those styles, you should enjoy this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "War". 8 out of 10.
