Sweden's Vanhelga have returned with a new recording which continues their atmospheric mixture of post black metal and depressive rock and this is a review of their 2018 album "Fredagsmys" which will be released in June by Osmose Productions.
Melodic riffing starts off the album along with some keyboards a few seconds later before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly grim black metal screams along with the solos and leads also using a great amount of melody.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while clean playing and acoustic guitars is also added into certain sections of the recording along with the music also bringing in a great amount of depressive rock elements as well as some melodic vocals and spoken word parts also being utilized at times and as the album progresses the music starts adding in more post rock influences, death metal growls can also be heard briefly and they close the album with an instrumental.
Vanhelga creates another recording that remains true to their atmospheric mixture of post black metal and depressive rock, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in a mixture of Swedish and English and cover personal issues, suicide, melancholy and hate themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Vanhelga and if you are a fan of atmospheric, post black metal and depressive rock, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Somnparalys" "Ensam Mot Alla" "Keep The Window Closed" and "You are Temporary". 8 out of 10.
