Snaer are a band from Maine that plays an old school form of black metal with elements of doom, death and thrash metal and this is a review of their self released 2021 album "Frozen Alchemy" which will be released in March.
A very dark sounding intro starts off the album along with some stringed instruments before going into a heavier direction. Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly on a couple of songs while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style.
Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams while all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some elements of doom metal in the slower sections of the songs. The riffs also show some influences of death and thrash metal as well as being heavily rooted in the 90's era but modern at the same time.
Clean playing and synths can also be heard briefly as well as a couple of the songs are also very long and epic in length, as the album progresses an instrumental can also be heard and the album closes with a cover of Bathory's "The Return Of Darkness And Evil". The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the folklore of Maine, Paganism and Occultism themes.
In my opinion Snaer are a very great sounding old school mixture of black, doom, death and thrash metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Black Stain" "Frozen Alchemy" and "March To The Ovens". 8 out of 10.
