Non Serviam are a band from France that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a mixture of black, doom metal, crust, grindcore, experimental, electro, industrial, baroque and trip hop and this is a review of their 2021 album "Work" which will be released in May by Trepanation Recordings.
Baroque style keyboards and heavy riffs start off the album while the vocals also add in a great amount of high pitched black metal screams. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard along with some female vocals also being added into some parts of the music.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling while spoken word parts can also be heard at times. The slower sections of the songs also add in the heaviness of doom metal along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody and the programmed beats also add in elements of trip hop.
At times the music also gets very experimental sounding along with some of the programmed beats also adding in touches of industrial and electro music. Some songs also add in clean playing as well as some of the faster sections of the tracks also showing an influence of crust and grindcore, a couple of the songs are also very long and epic in length and as the album progresses acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in French and and is a concept album based upon the question of work.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Non Serviam and if you are a fan of black, doom metal, crust, grindcore, experimental, electro, industrial, baroque and trip hop, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "O World, O Work" "Se Rapprocher de I' Emploi" "Desperandum" and "Soleil de Tempete". 8 out of 10.
