Montuln are a band from Chile that plays a very aggressive and melodic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Arquetipo" which was released by Australis Records.
A very distorted sounding background starts off the album before going into a heavier musical direction while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
The riffs also add in a great amount of melody while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length and growls can also be heard at times.
Clean playing can also be heard on some of the tracks along with one of the songs introducing melodic vocals onto the album. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also add in a great amount of melody as well as one of the songs also being an instrumental, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly and as the album progresses a brief use of synths are also utilized. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Spanish and cover Ancient Culture, War and Symbolism themes.
In my opinion Montuln are a very great sounding aggressive and melodic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hacia el orien" "Meli Witran Mapu" and "Umbral". 8 out of 10.
