Netherlands's Countess has returned with a new recording which continues the old school style of black/heavy metal from their previous releases and this is a review of their self released 2021 album "Banners Of Blood".
A very dark and heavy sound starts off the album while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of blast beats. Vocals are done in mostyl a shouting black metal style along with keyboards also being mixed in with the heavier parts of the music and all of the musical instruments also sound very powerful.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. The music also adds in a decent amount of traditional metal elements along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length as well as one of the songs also adds in a touch of folk music.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the recording more of a raw feeling along with one of the tracks also adding in a brief use of acoustic guitars, spoken word parts are also added into certain sections of the recording and most of the music also sticks to a mid tempo direction. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics are written in a mixture of English and Dutch and cover Occultism, Demonology, Paganism and European History themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Countess and if you are a fan of old school black metal or blackened heavy metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Below The Sky" "Banners Of Blood" "Fall Of The Achaemenid Empire" and "Sword Symphony". 8 out of 10.
