Eibon are a band from Singapore that plays a very atmospheric and melodic form of black metal and this is a review of their 1995 album "The Garden Of Theophrastus" which will be re-issued in November, 2022 by Rude Awakening Records with some bonus tracks from their demo's and 2003 ep.
Middle Eastern style musical sounds start off the album before going into a heavier direction while also introducing melodic guitar solos and leads onto the recording. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams along with the keyboards also giving the music more of an atmospheric feeling when they are utilized.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some female vocals also being utilized on a few tracks and the riffs also add in a lot of melody.
Some of the riffing also shows an influence of death and thrash metal along with one song also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them as well as a couple of the tracks also being long and epic in length, clean playing can also be heard on some of the songs.
Whispered vocals can also b e heard briefly as well as the demo tracks also bringing in more of a rawer style than the full length One of the tracks is also an instrumental as well as the ep tracks showing the band also improving as musicians and making the keyboards also sound more powerful, touches of traditional metal can also be heard at times. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover darkness, evil and occultism themes.
In my opinion Eibon are a very great sounding atmospheric and melodic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Noctium Phantasmata" "The Unholy Ground of Darkened Evil" "Rites Of Profanity" and "Blind Black Obsession". 8 out of 10.
