This is a a review of a split album between Portugal's Thy Black Blood and Grievance called "Unspeakable Acts & Occult Encryptions" which was released by War Productions and we will start off the review with Thy Black Blood a band that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very raw and evil form of black metal.
Their side of the split starts out with some rain and thunder sounds before going into a very fast and raw sound which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. A couple of their tracks are also very long and epic in length and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
The music also ads in a great amount of old school influences as well as remaining modern at the same time while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. A couple of tracks also adds in a brief use of clean playing along with the solos and leads also adding in more of a darker style, all of the musical instruments on their side of the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and synths can also be heard briefly and spoken word samples are also added on the closing song. The production sounds very dark and raw and the lyrics cover death, destruction and evil themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Thy Black Blood and if you are a fan of raw and evil black metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Invoke Torment" and "Flame Of Evil".
Next up is Grievance who return with their raw and old school style of occult black metal.
Their side of the split starts out with some dark soundscapes and acoustic guitars before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams and the riffs also add in a lot of melody.
All of the musical instruments on their side of the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. Throughout their side of the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the tracks also adding in a lot of 90's influences as well as the solos and leads also remaining very true to an old school style. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Occultism and Philosophy themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Grievance and if you are a f an of raw and old school occult black metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACSK INCLUDE "Atlantean Storms" and "Hermes Trismegistus Has Spoken".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of Portuguese black metal. 8 out of 10.
