Funeral Mass are a band from Poland that plays a very melodic and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2022 album "Shades Of The Raventhrone" which will be released in December.
Dark soundscapes start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. The riffs also add in a great amount of melody while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams and the music is also very heavily rooted in the classic Swedish style.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with the music also adding in some more modern touches at times as well as the album also having its atmospheric moments, synths can also be heard briefly and a couple of songs also adds in a small amount of clean playing.
Funeral Mass plays a style of black metal that is very melodic sounding and heavily rooted in the classic Swedish style without sounding outdated. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Witchcraft, Occultism, Paganism, Fantasy and War themes.
In my opinion Funeral mass are a very great sounding melodic and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "With Sinister Spell" and "Everlasting Pagan Flame". 8 out of 10.
