San Francisco California's solo project Botanist has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for an experimental and avant garde style of post black metal and this is a review of his 2023 album "VIII: Selenotrope" which will be released in may by Prophecy Productions.
Dulcimer's and d rums start off the album before going into a faster direction which also uses a great amount of blast b eats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while whispers are also utilized at times along with a great portion of the tracks also being very long and epic in length.
Touches of post black metal a re also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording while the songs also bring in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them along with some keyboards also being added into certain sections of the recording.
The album also has its experimental and avant garde moments along with some tracks also adding in clear male and female vocals as well as the recording also going into a progressive direction in certain sections of the recording, one of the tracks is also an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album based upon a protagonist who is referred to as 'The Botanist' who awaits the time of human's self eradication.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Botanist and if you are a fan of avant garde and experimental post black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Against The Selenic Light" "Angels Trumpet" and "The Flowering Dragon". 8 out of 10.
