Calligram are a band from the united Kingdom that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays an ice cold form of black metal with elements of d beat and punk and this is a review of their 2023 album "Position | Momentum" which will be released in June by Prosthetic Records.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals a r e mostly high pitched black metal screams while the riffs also add in a lot of melody while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style and a couple of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. Elements of punk and d beat can also be heard in the mid tempo sections of the songs along with a couple of tracks also adding in a small amount of clean playing, one song is also an instrumental that also adds in a small amount of synths and the album also has its atmospheric moments.
On this recording Calligram takes a very atmospheric, melodic and raw form of black metal and mixes it with d beat and punk to create a very aggressive sounding recording. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover pain, chaos, struggle and anxiety themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Calligram and if you are a fan of ice cold black metal, d beat and punk, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sul Dolore" "Tebe" and "Ex-Sistre". 8 out of 10.
