Esoctrilihum/Astral Constellations Of The Majickal Zodiac/I, Voidhanger Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  France's  solo  project  Esoctrilihum  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mystical  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  3  disc  album  "Astral  Constellations  Of  The  Majickal  Zodiac"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

   A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  When  synths  are  utilized  they  also  add  a  more  symphonic  style  to  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  whispers  and  spoken  words  also  being  utilized  at  times.

   All  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized.

   At  time s the  music  also  gets  very  psychedelic  sounding  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences.  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

   On  the  second  chapter  the  music  also  brings  in  more  brutality  as  well  keeping  the  symphonic  touches  of  the  first  chapter  along  with  the  third  chapter taking  the  music  into  more  of  a  progressive  direction  and  intruding  elements  of  doom  metal  into  the  songs,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  that  covers  a  war  between  zodiacal  deities  who  contend  for  dominion  over  reality  through  psychic  control  of  the  minds  which  are  also  inspired  by  Lovecraftian  cosmologies,  astrology,  space-time  concepts  and  reptilian  conspiracy  theories.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Esoctrilihum  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  mystical  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  triple  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Arcane  Majestirix  Noir"  "Shadow  Lupus  Of  Saemons-Thur"  "Lunaar  Phalanx  Of  O  Draco"  and  "Serpathei-Xythlon  -  Reptillian  Time  Reversed".  8/5  out  of  10.
