Besna are a band from Slovakia that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording played a very progressive form of post black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2018 ep which will be released in June, 2023 as a joint effort between Fiadh Productions and Vita Detastabilis Records.
A very heavy and melodic sound starts off the ep while the music also adds in a lot of post metal elements. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the solos and leads also adding in a lot of melody as well as the songs also adding in a great amount of progressive structures.
All of the musical instruments on their side of the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while all of the tracks are also very long and epic in length. Acoustic guitars and clean playing can also be heard on a couple of songs along with one song also introducing clear vocals onto the recording and most of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction, fast playing and blast beats can also be heard briefly and on the closing song whispered spoken word parts are also utilized.
On this recording Besna focused more on a mid tempo and progressive style of post black metal. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Slovakian and cover isolation and loneliness themes.
In my opinion this was another great sounding recording from Besna and if you are a fan of progressive post black metal, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Morena" and "Jazero". 8 out of 10.
