Oculi Melancholiarum are a solo project from Mexico that plays a depressive from of post black metal and this is a review of her 2023 album "Euphorbia" which will be released in may by Fiadh Productions.
A very dark, heavy and atmospheric sound starts off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Synths are also mixed in with the heavier sections of t he songs at times and the vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams.
When clean playing is utilized they also bring in elements of post rock while clear vocals are also added into some parts of the album. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some melodies also being added into the music at times.
One of the tracks is also very long and epic in length. as well as o couple of the songs also being instrumentals and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them, spoken word parts can also b e heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover melancholy, nostalgia and distress themes.
In my opinion Oculi Melancholiarum are a very great sounding depressive post black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Euphorbia" "Lobelia" and "Amadina". 8 out of 10.
