Sleepwalker are a band from Japan that has recently had an album reviewed in this zine and plays an experimental and avant garde form of psychedelic black metal and this is a review of their 2018 album "Ichi-go ichi-e" which will be released in May by Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
Atmospheric drones and soundscapes start off the album while tribal beats can also be heard at times along with the music also getting very ritualistic, experimental and avant garde sounding and after awhile powerful sounding bass guitars and grim whispers are added onto the recording.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard while the vocals are mostly distorted black metal screams along with the solos and leads bring done in a very melodic style when they are utilized as well as the music also bringing in elements of free jazz.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the tremolo picking during the faster sections of the songs gives the music more of a raw feeling along with some songs bringing in elements of psychedelic, krautrock and noise rock and a later track also introduces acoustic guitars onto the recording.
Sleepwalker creates another recording that remains true to their experimental, avant garde and psychedelic style of black metal, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover angry themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Sleepwalker and if you are a fan of experimental, avant garde and psychedelic black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "If Return_A Minor Glance" and "Never Ailments On Oneself". 8 out of 10.
