Bovary are a band from France that plays a very raw and depressive form of black metal and this is a review of their 2018 demo "Mes racines dans le desert" which will be re-issued on vinyl in October of 2020 by Sanit Mills Records.
Clean playing start off the demo along with some drum beats a few seconds later while clear singing, whispers and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them and on the second track the music also goes into a heavier direction.
The vocals also bring in a great amount of high pitched yet depressive black metal screams while the guitar leads are also done in a very melodic style. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with a couple of the tracks being very long and epic in length as well as one track also introducing synths onto the recording, clean playing also returns in some parts of the demo and melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing and as the recording progresses clear vocals also make a brief return. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in French and cover depression, hate and misanthropy themes.
In my opinion Bovary are a very great sounding raw and depressive black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ta vie c'est mes chiottes" and "Autonme". 8 out of 10.
