Ashbel are a band from Australia that plays a mixture of post black, doom metal, shoegaze. grind, hardcore and noise and this is a review of their 2020 album "Deluge" which was released by Nailed Nazarene Industries.
Harsh noises start off the album along with some heavier riffing a few seconds later while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. Grim black metal screams are also a very huge part of the recording along with some elements of doom metal also being added into the slower sections of the songs.
When guitar leads are utilized they are also done in a very distorted yet melodic style while the music also gets very experimental at times. When tremolo picking is utilized at also gives the songs more of a raw feeling along with some blast beats also being added into the faster section of the tracks.
Touches of shoegaze can also be heard in the cleaner sections of the songs along with the more aggressive side of the music also showing an influence of grindcore. The mid tempo sections of the songs also add in a touch of post hardcore, clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and all of the songs also sound very different from each other as well as one of the tracks also being an instrumental. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover philosophical themes.
In my opinion Ashbel are a very great sounding mixture of post black, doom metal, shoegaze. grind, hardcore and noise and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Painaway" "PTG" and "Absolved". 8 out of 10.
