Guignol Noir are a duo from Switzerland that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Mantric Meditation" which will be released in November by Repose Records.
A very dark, heavy and melodic sound starts off the album while you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are presented on the recording. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling.
Vocals are done in mostly a very grim yet almost spoken word style that also gives the music more of a first wave touch. Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody and at times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding.
Touches of post black metal can also be heard in some parts of the recording along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length as well as the music also adding in a decent mixture of both old school and modern influences and as the album progresses the music also becomes more diverse sounding.
When guitar leads are finally utilized they are also done in a very melodic style as well as a couples of later tracks also introduces clean playing and acoustic guitars onto the recording along with one of the songs also being an instrumental. the music also has its dissonant moments. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Occultism, Heresy. Drug Abuse, Death and Negativity themes.
In my opinion Guignol Noir are a very great sounding atmospheric post black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Birthgiven Right" "G.N" "Graveyard Bogey" and "Rotten Drvgfest". 8 out of 10.
