Modrig are a duo from Germany that plays a very raw and atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 compilation album "Ablebend/Madenmahl" which will be released on September 22nd on cassette by Breathe Plastic and consists of both of their ep's.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the compilation along with a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the music also captures a very lo-fi atmosphere as well as adding some synths and clean playing at times.
The music also has its atmospheric moments while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Distorted sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with one of the tracks also being an instrumental along with the vocals also getting very deep sounding at times as well as having their melancholic moments.
The second ep also starts out with an acoustic intro before going into a heavier direction along with the music also keeping the style of the first ep but also showing a great amount of progress as musicians and one of the tracks is also long and epic in length as well as introducing melodic guitar leads and solos onto the recording, acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover personal loss themes.
In my opinion Modrig are a very great sounding raw and atmospheric black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Erde" and "Verganen". 8 out of 10.
