Gergovia are a solo project from France that plays a very modern form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2020 album "In Requiem Aeternam".
Dark sounding synths start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style and all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Elements of death metal can also be heard in some parts of the recording along with one track also introducing angry sounding spoken word parts into the music.
Some songs also add in a small amount of clear vocals along with one track also adding in a touch of industrial as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, synths also mix in with the heavier sections of the music and programmed beats can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and as the album progresses a brief use of Gregorian chants can also be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in French and cover War, Gallics, Misanthropy and Death themes.
In my opinion Gergovia are a very great sounding modern black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS Include "M'arracher au loin" "Paria" "Le fleau des sacrifies" and "Sonne angelus". 8 out of 10.
