Finland's Hiidenhauta have returned with a new recording which continues the folk inspired style of black metal from their previous release and this is a review of their 2020 album "Riivin" which will be released on September 18th by Inverse Records.
A very dark and heavy sound starts off the album along with some angry sounding black metal screams a few seconds later. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style and clean male and female singing can also be heard at times.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. One track also introduces folk instruments onto the recording along with the tracks also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, a couple of tracks also introduces spoken word parts onto the album.
On this recording Hiidenhauta remains true to the melodic and folk inspired style of black metal that they had established on their previous release. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Finnish and is a concept album based upon the Devil of Finnish Folklore.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Hiidenhauta and if you are a fan of folk inspired black metal, you should check out the album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Riidenlieko" "Petaja" "Halava" and "Harmio". 8 out of 10.
