Australia/Norway's duo Chagrin have returned with a new recording which continues the atmospheric style of post black metal from their previous releases and this is a review of t heir self released 2020 ep "Memories Never Die".
Clean playing starts off the ep along with some programmed beats a few seconds later which also takes the music into more of a heavier and melodic musical direction. Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams and the solos and leads also add in a great amount of melody and post metal elements.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding while clean playing can also be heard in some parts of the recording. One track also introduces synths onto the recording along with anothe song also bringing in some spoken word parts, stringed instruments and shoegaze touches and all of the music sticks to wither a slow or mid tempo direction.
On this recording Chagrin remains true to the atmospheric post black metal style that was established on previous releases. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion his is another great sounding recording from Chagrin and if you are a fan of atmospheric post black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Destruct Myself" and "Our Autumn". 8 out of 10.
