Kodu are a band form Estonia that plays a very melodic and dissonant form of black metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Unusta Koik" which will be released on March 21st by Nigredo Records.
A very dark and heavy sound starts off the album while dissonant structures can also be heard ar times. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the vocals being mostly high pitched black metal screams and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling while the songs also add in a decent mixture of old school and modern influences. The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some clean playing also being utilized briefly as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style when they are finally introduced into the music and as the album progresses a brief use of synths can also be heard, the closing track is also very long and epic in length.
Kodu plays a style of black metal that is very melodic and dissonant sounding and mixing it in with an old school aggression to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Estonian and cover the poets of the 19th and 20th century and mythology of their homeland , natures connection to man and the philosophy of the Northern people.
In my opinion Kodu are a very great sounding dissonant and melodic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sugispime" "Kaotsin" and "Laotus". 8 out of 10.
