Nature Morte are a band from France that plays a mixture of post black metal and blackgaze and this is a review of their 2021 album "Messe Basse" which will be released in May by Source Atone Records.
Atmospheric sounding drones start off the album along with some clean playing a few seconds later which also brings elements of post rock onto the album before going into a heavier direction. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Shoegaze influences are also a very huge part of the recording while a great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with the faster sections of the songs also adding in a lot of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with the songs also adding in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly as well as a brief use of acoustic guitars being added into the music as the album progresses, synths can also be heard in certain sections of the recording. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and melancholic themes.
In my opinion Nature Morte are a very great sounding mixture of post black metal and blackgaze and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Only Shallowness" "Knife" and "Night's Silence". 8 out of 10.
