Varde are a band form Norway that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a folk orientated form of atmospheric black metal and this is a review of their 2018 ep "Asgaardsrein" which will be re-issued on March 26th by Nordvis Produktion.
Nature sounds start off the ep before going into a heavier and melodic musical direction while the first song is also over 17 minutes in length. The solos and leads also add in a great amount of melody along with the vocals being mostly grim sounding black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with some synths also being added into some parts of the recording.
When clear vocals are utilized they also give the music more of a pagan and Viking atmosphere along with the music also adding in touches of folk music as well as showing some influences from the classic Norwegian era. when tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the recording more of a raw feeling and acoustic guitars, keyboards and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Norwegian and cover history of storytelling, folklore and National Romanticism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Varde and if you are a fan of folk orientated atmospheric black metal, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Asgaardsrein". 8 out of 10.
