Thermohaline are an international duo with members from Brazil and Belgium that also play in O-Nun and Druon Antigon and plays a very avant garde and progressive form of black metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Maelstrom" which will be released on March 26th by Onism Productions.
Ocean sounds start off the album along with some clean playing a few seconds later before going into a heavier direction. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while the synths also give the songs more of an avant garde feeling when they are utilized.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. Vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams along with the tracks also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Death metal growls can also be heard in some parts of the recording along with the riffing also mixing in some elements from that genre. The riffs also also add in a great amount of melody as well as the music also having its progressive moments, female vocals can also be heard briefly.
Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length as well as one of the songs also introducing spoken word parts onto the album as well as adding in a brief use of horns, clean male vocals and whispers can also be heard in certain sections of the recording, touches of electronic music can also be heard at times. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover myths and mysteries about the ocean.
In my opinion Thermohaline are a very great sounding avant garde and progressive black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Obra Dinn" and "Dark Corners Of The Ocean". 8 out of 10.
