Phallosopher are a solo project from Finland that plays an avant garde mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of his 2021 album (I)" which was released by Inverse Records.
A very dark sounding synth orientated intro starts off the album along with a brief use of distorted spoken word parts before going into a heavier direction. At times the music also captures the energy of punk rock while the vocals are mostly angry yet deep sounding black metal screams which also adds in a touch of the first wave era.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. When clean vocals are utilized they are also done in a very avant garde along with the solos and leads being done in a very distorted yet melodic style.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some elements of death metal also being utilized at times. Synths can also be heard in some parts of the recording and they also add in touches of ambient along with some of the clean playing also showing an influence of jazz music, a couple of the tracks are also instrumentals. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Magick, Occultism, Death and finding spiritual freedom in the never ending-interplay between creation and annihilation.
In my opinion Phallosopher are a very great sounding avant garde mixture of black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "I-Phallo-O-Sopher" "Black Light of Creation" and "Whore of the Beast". 8 out of 10.
