Poland's Batushka have returned with a new recording which continues the atmospheric and choir oriented style of black metal and this is a review of their 2021 ep "Carju Niebiesnyj" which was released by Witching Hour Productions.
Clean playing starts off the ep along with some whispers and ritualistic sounding bells a few seconds later. Synths can also be heard in some parts of the recording while elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs and the music also brings in a great amount of choir vocals.
Melodies can also be heard in some of the riffing while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to the,. When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling and spoken word parts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording.
The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some black metal screams also being utilized at times.as well as some symphonic and folk music touches also being added into some parts of the music and as the ep progresses a brief use of female vocals can also be heard, the closing track is also very long and epic in length. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Russian and Old Slavonic and cover Religion and Eastern Orthodox Liturgy themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Batushka and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Pismo II" and "Pismo VI". 8 out of 10.
