Sulpur are a solo project from an unknown location that plays a very raw, melodic and old school form of black metal and this is a review of his 2021 album "Embracing Hatred and Beckoning Darkness" which was released as a joint effort between Amor Fati and Ancient Records.
A very dark synth orientated intro starts off the album before going into more of a heavier musical direction while also introducing high pitched black metal screams into the music. During the faster sections of the songs a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while the music is also very heavily rooted in the more underground side of the 90's. The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording.
Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly along with a great portion of the tracks also being very long and epic in length as well as the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody, when guitar leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style and a small amount of acoustic guitars can be heard on the closing track. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover Occultism, Magick and Darkness themes.
In my opinion Sulpur are a very great sounding raw, melodic and old school black metal solo bandaband if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Blessed By Foul Magick" and "As Stars Line The Path To Glory". 8 out of 10.
