Vermilia are a solo project form Finland that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording played a very atmospheric and epic form of black metal and this is a review of her self released 2018 album "Katkyt" which was re-issued on vinyl in 2021.
A very heavy and melodic sound starts off the album while clean vocals can also be heard in some parts of the recording. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also use a lot of melody along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them and grim black metal screams are also a very huge part of the songs.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length.
The music also having its atmospheric and epic moments and as the album progresses a brief use of tribal sounds, shamanistic chants, synths and spoken word parts can also be heard along with a later song also adding in a brief use of acoustic guitars. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics are written in Finnish and cover nature and paganism themes.
In my opinion this was another great sounding recording from Vermilia and if you are a fan of atmospheric and epic pagan black metal, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Aiti Maa" "Saattaja" and "Mustan Taivaan Morsian". 8 out of 10.
