Black Void Cult Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Well, Black Void Cult was originally supposed to be a "one man band", but along the way I decided to invite the most talented musicians I know: Fernando for the lead guitar and Chucho for the drums. When I started creating the first riffs and song structures I always imagined this project to not be tied to any subgenre in particular, but to keep the root and heart as a Black Metal band. 2 albums later I think it has accomplished that.

2.So far you have released 2 albums, musically how do they both differ from each other?

The debut was more of a longing and nostalgic feeling record, for sure, it has its heavy parts but mostly it is atmospheric, melodic and deppresive. The Sophomore album dwells a lot more in anger, aggression, frustration and pain. It was created and recorded in pandemic times so, that explains a lot. Both of them have similar piano parts and Orchestral sections.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

The debut lyrics were inspired from the contemplation of human reality, and most of all, the regrets we all likely have when reaching a certain age; all the songs names are feelings or specific situations that have a name in other languages but are hard to translate. The new album turns in a different, but still similar, direction: The mistakes of the human race as a whole, the unavoidable path towards death and the contemplation of the majestic nature of the cosmos, and the realization that (as the title says) even the stars, planets, solar systems and galaxies die, so what can we expect of us? We think we're so important but when we die only our loved ones will remember us, and not for long.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Black Void Cult'?

After all is said and done, the only certainty is death, the Void, the Black Void. 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Sure, it was commissioned to a very talented digital artist (Mustapha Designs) and it captured perfectly what I wanted to show for the album cover. A person (representing all of humanity) contemplating a long and winding road (life) with a sky full of stars and planets. It's a beautiful cover that perfectly represents the content of the album.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

As of now, we still are a studio-only band. And will remain like that for the foreseeable future.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

No

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We are working with Concreto Records locally for the physical distribution of "...Even the Stars have to Die", they also distributed the first one, but the deal is not exclusive. If a label approaches us with a European distribution proposal, we are open to negotiate.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Overall, it's been great. Thanks to social networks and apps like Spotify or Apple Music, Black Void Cult's music has reached places that I would've never dreamed of, like Japan or Iceland. The feedback that I've received has also been great, even though the music is not what you may call "trve Black Metal", it's very unorthodox, and I like that very much.

10.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

Yes, Fernando the lead guitarist is also a member of "Through Torment", "Ash Nazg Burz", and "Hacavitz" also he recently completed a tour with "Xiat", "Unholy Lust", "Avzhia" and "Serpents Oath". He's a super talented guitarist and a very good friend.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I'd like to continue creating music without subgenre boundaries, so if anything you can expect it to become even more unorthodox and weird.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

My biggest influence besides Black Metal is Thrash and Heavy Metal, which I guess it's no surprise if you hear the riffs. I've never been a big fan of Death Metal though. Outside of the metal realm my influences are Alternative Rock, Hard Rock and Psychedelic Trance (especially Darkpsy).

Fernando loves Black and Death Metal and any extreme music genre, Chucho moves more towards the Progressive side of music.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Just a big Thank You to everyone that has given Black Void Cult and opportunity to enter your headspace. And remember, the music and the lyrics may be bleak, raw and existentialist, but each of us has only one life, and it must be lived to the fullest, even if it's pointless and meaningless in the end.
