Swords of Dis are a duo from the United Kingdom that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording goes for more of an old school and occult mixture of black and doom metal and this is a review of their 2023 album "Melencolia" which will b e released in November by I, Voidhanger Records.
Dark sounding synths start off the album along with some clear male vocals a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of songs at times. Elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the recording and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style.
A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the clean sections of the songs also add in some avant garde touches. Black metal screams and death metal growls are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording along with the faster sections of the album also adding in a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.
A lot of the music is very heavily rooted in the 90's era along with a more modern approach also being mixed in. Clean female vocals are also added in certain sections of the recording as well as the album also having its symphonic moments, melodies are also added into a lot of the guitar riffing. The songs also bring in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Our Lady Of The Naked Flame and the Goddess Of Eternal Holy Fire.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Swords Of Dis and if you are a fan of old school and occult black and doom metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mask Of The Myriad" "Oculus Diaboli" "Eclipsing The Deathless Sun" and "Palimpest". 8 out of 10.
