Crystal Coffin are a band from Vancouver B.C, Canada that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording plays a very melodic and progressive form of black metal and this is a review of their 2023 album "The Curse Of Immortality" which will be released on Halloween by A Beast In The Field.
Synths start off the album and also brings in the atmosphere of either a classic or science fiction film before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams and you can also hear all of the instruments that are present on the recording.
The songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while a couple of tracks are also long and epic in length. Melodies are also added into a lot of the guitar riffing along with some pianos also mixing in with the heavier sections of the songs at times and the album also has its progressive moments.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with a couple of songs also adding in a small amount of acoustic guitars and clean playing as well as one track also introducing clear vocals onto the recording, female vocals and spoken word samples can also be heard briefly and the closing track is an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover suicide, cryogenics, state control and evil rites with some inspiration from horror and science fiction.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Crystal Coffin and if you are a fan of melodic and progressive black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Undead" "Cryogenesis" and "Leviathans Encased". 8 out of 10.
