Athame are a band with members from Maryland and West Virginia that plays a very raw form of occult black metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "With Cunning Fore And Adversarial Resolve" which was released by Grimoire Records.
Dark sounding atmospheric synths start off the album along with some demonic voices in the background which also gives the music a ritualistic feeling and after the intro drum beats kick in and the music evolves into more of a fast and raw style of black metal along with some grim screams and tremolo picking.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard along with some morbid sounding melodies and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them while the guitar solos and leads bring in more of a melodic style and the music brings in a great amount of 90's second wave influences while also sounding very modern at the same time and as the album progresses ritualistic elements also make a return in certain sections of the recording and a couple of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
Athame plays a style of occult black metal that is very raw, heavy, aggressive and melodic in the true tradition of the genre, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Luciferian Witchcraft, Satanism and Occultism themes.
In my opinion Athame are a very great sounding raw and melodic satanic and occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Lost Congregation" "The Heretic's Horn" and "This Is What The Devil Does". 8 out of 10.
