Ashaena are a band from Romania that plays a pagan form of black metal with elements of folk music and this is a review of their 2016 album "Caela" which was released by Loud Rage Music.
A very dark and heavy sound starts off the album along with some melodic guitar leads and after a few seconds grim black metal screams are added onto the recording along with all of t he musical instruments sounding very powerful and the riffs also use a great amount of melody while the music can also be very atmospheric at times.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the music more of a raw black metal feeling and clean guitars can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and they also mix in a lot of pagan metal elements while there is also a brief use of death metal growls.
Melodic pagan chanting can be heard in the music at times and when acoustic guitars are utilized they bring in elements of folk music and melodic singing can also be heard at times and some of the tracks are very long and epic in length and as the album progresses they bring in an instrumental track that also introduces folk instruments onto the recording while t he remaining songs do use vocals.
Ashaema plays a musical style that takes and atmospheric form of black metal and mixes it with pagan metal and some folk music elements to create something very original, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Paganism, Mythology, Nature and Romanian History themes.
In my opinion Ashaema are a very great sounding pagan/black metal band with elements of folk music and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Tapae 87" "Spirit-Sageata" and "Mos Urs". 8 out of 10.
