Thokkian Vortex are a band originally from the United States but now re-located to Israel that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "Into the Nagual" which was released by Unexploded Records.
Ambient sounds start off the album along with some grim whispers a few seconds later which also takes the music into more of a ritualistic direction and elements of classical music can also be heard at times and after awhile the music starts going into more of a fast and raw black metal direction that uses tremolo picking and blast beats.
When solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and they also mix the classical and ambient elements in with the heavier sections of the music while spoken word parts and samples can also be heard at times.
All of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and some songs bring in a small amount of death metal growls and some of the riffs also use a decent amount of melody and some songs also mix in tribal sounds, on one of the tracks a brief use of clean singing can be heard and they close the album with a cover of "Jesus Must Die" from the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack.
Thokkian Vortex plats a musical style that is mostly rooted in the black metal of the 90's while also standing out with the ritualistic, ambient and classical elements, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Satanism, Occultism, Anti Christian and Mysticism themes.
In my opinion Thokkian Vortex are a very great sounding satanic and occult black metal and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Funearel Winds Beckon My Return" "Choronzon Conjured" "Evil Sluts Of Satan" "This Jesus Must Die". 8 out of 10.
