Voodus are a band from Sweden that plays an occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2016 ep "Nightqueen" which was released on Sliptrick Records.
A very distorted amp sound starts off the ep before going into more of a heavier musical direction and dark sounding melodies can also be heard at times while all of the musical instruments sound very powerful and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style while the vocals are grim black metal screams.
A lot of the music has a more modern Swedish style and whispers can also be heard briefly and classical guitars are also added into certain sections of the recording and when the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling along with some blast beats.
Most of the tracks are very long and epic in length and there are also some spoken vocals which also gives the music more of a ritualistic atmosphere and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and some tracks also bring in a small amount of clean guitars and as the ep progresses elements of thrash and first wave black metal can be heard in some of the guitar riffing and a later song is all instrumental before closing the ep with a heavier track that utilizes vocals.
Voodus plays a style of occult black metal that is very raw and melodic while being mostly rooted in the modern Swedish style of the genre, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the Lilith Qlipha, Sitra Achra and Left Hand Path themes.
In my opinion Voodus are a very great sounding occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Envoy From The Shores Of The Eternal Night" and "The Burning Light Of Daath". 8 out of 10.
