Neige et Noirceur are a solo project from Quebec, Canada that has been featured before in this zine and plays an ambient style of black metal with elements of drone and doom metal and this is a review of his 2016 album "Les Tenebres Modernes" which will be released on June 23rd by Sepulchural Productions.
A very dark, haunting yet heavy sound starts off the album along with some grim screams and melodic chants in the background and the music also mixes in a great amount of atmospheric and ambient elements while demonic growls can also be heard at times and clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording.
Some of the riffs bring in a decent amount of melody and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking are utilized which also gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and one track also brings in a brief use of war samples.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic, modern and atmospheric style and some tracks also bring in elements of drone and doom metal in the slower sections of the songs and as the album progresses a small amount of choir vocals and field recordings can be heard.
Neige et Noirceur creates a very diverse recording that has its raw moments while still being very atmospheric and ambient at times while also mixing in traces of drone and doom metal which also takes the songs in more of a haunting direction, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in French and cover World War II, Luciferian and Occultism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Neige et Noirceur and if you are a fan of ambient black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Si Vis, Para Bellum" "Walpurgis 1917" "La Mecanique de Lucifer" and "Des Spectres". 8 out of 10.
