Vow Of Thorns are a band from Ontario, Canada that plays an atmospheric mixture of post black metal and doom and this is a review of their 2016 album "Farewell To the Sun" which will be released in July.
A heavy guitar sound starts off the album along with some drum beats a few seconds later and a few seconds alter melodic guitar leads make their presence known on the recording which also lads up to grim black metal screams making their presence known on the recording and when acoustic guitars are utilized they give the music a progressive edge.
A great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and there is also a small amount of growls which adds in a touch of death metal while some of the slower riffs and leads bring in elements of doom metal while some of the lead also mix in post metal, on some of the tracks the guitars bring in a small amount of tremolo picking while one song is all instrumental and all of the songs stick to either a slow or mid paced musical direction.
Vow Of Thorns plays a musical style that takes the atmospheric, progressive and post forms of black metal and mixes it with doom metal to create a style of their own, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover life, despair, death, depression and nature themes.
In my opinion Vow Of Thorns are a very great sounding atmospheric and progressive mixture of post black metal and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Great Abomination" and "Doomed Woods". 8 out of 10.
