Somnium Nox are a duo from Australia that plays an ambient, experimental and progressive style of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2016 ep "Apocrypha".
Ambient synths start off the ep giving the music an atmospheric sound along with some didgeridoo's which also add an ethnic feeling to the song which is over 16 minutes long along with some programmed drum beats being added onto the recording while the solos and leads are very distorted and melodic sounding.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard along with some tremolo picking which also gives the music a raw black metal feeling along with some high pitched screams and the riffs can also be very melodic at times while clean playing can also be heard in some parts of the song which also brings in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and when acoustic guitars are utilized they also give the song more of a progressive feeling. and there is also a small amount of death metal growls.
Somnium Nox creates a track that mixes in the raw, atmospheric and post styles of the black metal genre while also giving it more of a progressive, experimental and ambient touch, the production sounds very powerful for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover dark and esoteric themes.
In my opinion Somnium Nox are a very great sounding experimental and progressive black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. 8 out of 10.
