Unknown are a musical project from Portland, Oregon that consists of members of 'Chasma' and plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their self released and untitled 2016 ep.
A very distorted guitar amp sound starts off the ep before going into a heavier direction which also introduces grim black metal screams onto the recording and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length while also having an improv feeling and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
You can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording while the faster sections of the songs bring in more of a raw black metal feeling while some of the riffs also bring in a small amount of tremolo picking you can also hear the more modern, atmospheric and post side of the genre in the solos and leads which also get very melodic at times and clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and there is also a brief use of spoken word parts while some tracks also bring in depressive elements.
Unknown creates a style of black metal that is very raw, ,modern and atmospheric while also having its melodic moments and bringing in a more Cascadian approach to the genre, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion Unknown are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Unknown 2' and "Unknown 5". 8 out of 10.
