Winterlore are a band from Utah that plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2016 album which was released in May by Slaughterhouse Records.
Winds and winter sounds start off the album and a few seconds later melodic guitar leads, drums and heavy riffs make their presence known on the recording along with some grim black metal screams and all of the musical instruments also sound very powerful and when the music speeds up it goes for more of a raw black metal style.
Tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard in the faster sections of the songs and the music is very heavily rooted in the 90's while a great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and there is also a small amount of death metal growls being utilized at times and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Some songs also bring in melodic chanting and singing which gives the music more of a pagan or viking metal feeling along acoustic guitars which also gives the music more of an atmospheric edge. while a later track brings in a brief use of flutes while clean playing can be heard on the last song.
Winterlore plays a style of black metal that is raw and grim in the 90's style while also mixing it in with a great amount of melody and epic structures the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover barkness, Norse Mythology and anti religion themes.
In my opinion Winterlore are a very great sounding raw, epic and melodic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Spires Of Ascension" and "Winterlore". 8 out of 10.
