Carthaun are a band from Germany that plays a very raw and traditional form of black metal and this is a review of their 2015 album "Staub Und Schatten" which was released by Northern Fog Productions.
Melodic guitar leads and militant beats start off the album and after the intro the music goes into a very fast and raw black metal direction that also utilizes a great amount of blast beats and high pitched screams as well as the guitars utilizing a great amount of tremolo picking and the music is very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave tradition.
Throughout the recording there is a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and you can also hear clean playing, acoustic guitars, and war samples at times and some of the riffs also bring melodies onto the recording and the whole album also remains true to an old school style of black metal and there is also a brief use of melodic chants and they also bring in one track that is very long and epic in length.
Carthaun plays a style of black metal that is very raw and traditional and goes back to the 90's style as well as avoiding any modern trends of the past 20years, the production has a very raw and old school sound while the lyrics are written in German and cover Anti Christianity, War and nature themes.
In my opinion Carthaun are a very great sounding raw and traditional black metal and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Durch' "Charge Of the Light Brigade" and "Heimwarts". 8 out of 10.
