Lugburz Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

B: Greetings! First of all thanks for the interest in Lugburz. We really appriciate this.

We are currently working on new material. In fact we almost had everything ready, but due to the line up problems we just have to start everything again. The line up now is Tanatos-guitars,and Berith-bass,vocals,drumms( at least till we find a devoted drummer).

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?

B:It’s pure black metal. I mean we were, are and forever will be a black metal band. Triumph is more raw than Pure Misanthropy of Death. For sure we’ve achieved more brutal and maybe more technical sound with our second album. In our music you can hear some death metal, thrash metal influences. We just use every „tool”  to express ourselfs. Raw Black Metal of Death!

3.The last album was released in 2013 and before that there was no new material for 7 years and there also has not been music released in 3 years, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap in between releases?

B: Well it’s because we release our music when we think it’s ready in 100%. Of course we had some label problems( it seems that old school black metal isn’t a style which labels are looking for haha) and, as i’ve said before, line up problems also didn’t speed thing up.

4.Your lyrics do cover some anti christian, let hand path and Satanism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the black arts?

B: Triumph indeed treat some anti christian themes but Pure is far from it. Left Hand Path is something which always attracted black metal bands in one or another way and us of course also. As it goes for Lugburz we still have this luciferian rebel and darkness. It is inspiring us in many ways, but i am very, very far from calling our music „occult black metal” or any other, nowadays terms. You know christianity is not something what interests me, and with Pure Misanthropy we’ve just realised that all this anti christianity doesn’t make sens in our case. All those band that are „screaming” about killing christians etc., and doing nothing are just fucking bullshit and we are not going to be one of them.If you preach something you should do this. I am an adversary  not only for christian god, but also for any other false demiurgic form.If you think that some pagan gods are better than christian or islamic god, because it was before them you are very wrong in my opinion. Anti Cosmic Satanism is something which define my world view and through music I am expressing this view but as i’ve said I wouldn’t call Lugburz an „ occult black metal” band. For me black metal always deals with Satan in one way or another, and if some bands don’t get this, they are not a chanells for Dark Forces but only a mindless tools.

5.I know that the bands name comes from the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

B:I wasn’t in the band when the name has been chosen, but still I think it’s a great name for the band. It defines us in many ways. Dark Tower is not only tolkien’s invention you know, Lugburz is just one of the names for the Black Tower. But if you are looking for a greater philosophy  in our name you will be disappointed cause the name has been chosen cause of interest in J.R.R. Tolkien and not some occult, satanic rituals etc. It’s powerful, dark and obscure and that’s fine by me because our music is just like this name.If you are listening to our music you should imagine Dark Tower from which cursed souls are howling. I will just say, that not only we have chosen our name from Tolkien, Burzum, Morgoth just to mention haha.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

B:Hmmm it’s a hard question cause i’ve only played two times live with Lugburz, and both shows were great for me.But as far as i know shows with Witchmaster and Hell-Born were amazing. You know we are not a band which puts an altar on stage and thousand candles. It’s just not our way of expression. Of course we still use some traditional black metal stuff  like corpse paints, spikes etc.. It is about creating a dark atmosphere and we are using our music to make it, but if we will feel the need of using blood or pig heads for sure we won’t limit ourselfs.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

B:No, for now there are no live plans cause we are just a duo. Maybe in the future we will find a devoted drummer who will play with us, but for now this case is closed. I am really into playing live, but you know we are tired of playing some shitty shows, cause it only deforms everything what we want to express. If the show is not prepared rightly it’s not good for the band and for the audience.

8.In 2006 you where part of a split with 'Meghorash', what are your thoughts on the other band that had participated on the album?

B:There are no thoughts from my side simply because his music is not interesting for me personally. Don’t get me wrong but some things which Lugburz made in the past weren’t, hmmm just to say, totally contemplated. I don’t consider this split as a mistake or something because our music, on this split, is honest and really in our style, but I think in that time band didn’t thought enough about with whom will they share this split. If there will be any splits in the future i can assure you, that we will be more conscious in this matter.Still I must say that In leauge with Satan is killer track haha.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

B:Most of the reviews are really great. Especially after releasing Pure Misanthropy I have read only few, but very good reviews. I have sent some cd’s personally and people from Sweden, Norway, Russia and Poland of course, think this album is really strong. It’s really big thing for us that there is a feedback on what we do, since we’ve never had a strong,or any at all, promotion( even if I think Satanath Records did a great job for us!).Of course every band dream about huge events, great promotion and living from music but hey this is black metal, it’s not about money and fame!

10.When can we expect new material and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

B:As I’ve mentioned, new stuff is almost ready( I just need to learn how to play drumms haha!). We are working hard to create something different from what we’ve done in the past and, at the same time, to keep our own style. Hmmm we will see what will come, but i can assure you that it still will be solid black metal. We’ve decided to go a little bit more to the roots of black metal, more raw, less technical and simplier than Pure was.For sure I want lyrics to be more darker and possessed with the new album. We are not planing things they are just happening and we just Jump in the Fire!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

For sure the whole norwegian black metal scene from the ’90. Immortal, Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone,Gorgoroth just to mention few. For us those bands are the essence of what black metal is, but of course Venom,Celtic Frost, Hellhammer,Bathory or polish Kat are also our great inspiration. Personally, for me Live in Leipzig is the greatest black metal album of all times, Mayhem at it’s best. Nowadawys I am really into Watain, Blaze of Perdition,Vader(new album just killed me!). My greatest band of all time is Dissection, but get me right, we will never be playing like any of these band, because Lugburz is creating and not copying. I’ve always thought that original is better than hundred of copys, and we don’t need 100 Mayhems or Watains. If i want to listen to Iron Maiden i will listen to them not to some shitty band that only tries  to be greatest heavy metal band in the world.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

B: Once again thanks for the interest in Lugburz. We hope to release new stuff in this year, so keep your eyes and ears open for the damned sounds will attack! Blackest Regards to you for keeping the Black Flame burning!
