This is a review of a split album between new York's Bog Body and South Carolina's Primitive Warfare called "The Gate Of Grief/Undulating Torment" which will be released on August 14th by Stygian Black hand and we will start off the review with Bog Body a band that has had music reviewed before in this zine plays a mixture of black, sludge and doom metal.
Their side of the split starts out with a very dark and heavy sound where the bass guitar replaces regular guitars as the lead instrument. Elements of sludge and doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams.
Death metal growls can also be heard at times while dark sounding melodies are also added into some parts of the music. Blast beats can also be heard when the music speeds up briefly along with some keyboards also being utilized briefly on a couple of tracks and most of the music also sticks to either a slow or mid tempo section as well as adding in a brief use of spoken word parts.
On this recording Bog Body remain true to the mixture of black, sludge and doom metal t hat was established on their previous release. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover death, sacrifice, mythology and religion themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Bog Body and if you are a fan of black, sludge and doom metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Strangled In The Throat Of Perim".
Next up is Primitive Warfare a band that plays a mixture of war, black and death metal.
Their side of the split starts out with some ethnic folk instruments before going into a very fast and raw war metal direction which also uses a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the music more of a raw feeling while the vocals are a mixture of bestial growls and black metal screams.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while some of the faster sections of the music also adds in the brutality of grindcore. Harsh noises can also be heard briefly along with all of the riffing being done on power chords and the music also avoids the use of any melody and focuses more on raw aggression and heaviness and towards the end a powerful bass guitar sound can also be heard.
Primitive Warfare plays a musical style that mixes bestial b lack/death and war metal to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover war, death and Antichrist themes.
In my opinion Primitive Warfare are a very great sounding mixture of war, black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Undulating Torment". 8 out of 10.
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all f ans of blackened doom and war metal. 8 out of 10.
