Illkynja are a solo project from Iceland that plays a very aggressive, experimental and dissonant form of black metal and this is a review of his 2020 album "Sæti Sálarinnar" which will be released in September by Goathorned Productions.
Dark soundscapes start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction while the vocals are mostly deep and demonic sounding growls. The riffs also add in a great amount of dissonant structures along with a couple of the tracks also being very long and epic in length.
All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while grim black metal screams are also utilized at times. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can also be heard along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody.
Most of the music is very heavily rooted in a more modern style of black metal along with the guitar leads being done in a very dark yet melodic style when they are utilized. As the album progresses a brief ambient interlude can also be heard before returning back to a heavier musical direction as well as the music also having its atmospheric and experimental moments at times, most of the music sticks to a mid tempo direction and clean playing can also be heard on the closing track. The production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics are written in Icelandic and cover darkness and destruction themes.
In my opinion Illkynja are a very great sounding aggressive, experimental and dissonant black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ég er ljósið, eldurinn og upphafið" "Sæti Sálarinnar" and "Dýrð í harmleik". 8 out of 10.
