Funeral Procession are a band from Germany that plays an old school, hypnotic and depressive form of black metal and this is a review of his 2022 compilation album "Schmerz Aus Licht/The Red Vine Litanies" which will be released on cassette may 16th as a joint effort between Korpituli Proiductions and Millenial Visions and consists of their 2006 and 2008 ep's.
A very dark yet heavy sound starts off the compilation along with the vocals being mostly grim sounding black metal screams. All of the musical instruments on the compilation also have a very powerful sound to them while keyboards can also be heard at times and both of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Clean playing can also be heard briefly along with a brief use of spoken word parts while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. and the compilation also adds in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
The sounds of alcohol can also b e heard briefly along with the second ep on the compilation bringing in more of a second wave style as well as being a lot more rawer than the first style as well as the music also having its atmospheric moments, when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style and Gregorian chants are also added on the second song. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in a mixture of German and English and cover Darkness, Night, Nature and Alcoholic Spirits.
In my opinion Funeral Procession are a very great sounding old school, hypnotic and depressive black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACK "The Red Vine Litanies". 8 out of 10.
