Kampfeswut are a duo from Germany that plays an ambient and medieval folk influenced form of black metal and this is a review of their 2022 album "Des Barden schwarzer Gesang" which was released by Crush The Desert Records.
Melodic guitar solos and leads start off the album along with some grim black metal screams a f ew seconds later. Clear pagan vocals can also be heard at times while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of blast beats and when acoustic guitars are utilized they also bring in elements of medieval folk music.
Spoken word parts are also added on some of the tracks while the riffs also add in a good amount of melody. Folk instruments are also added in certain sections of the album along with one song also adding in a brief use of whispers and when synths are utilized they also bring in touches of ambient music.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with most of the songs also sounding different from each other and when tremolo picking is finally utilized they also give the album more of a raw feeling, growls can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in German and cover Mythology, Witchcraft, War, Nature and Animal Rights.
In my opinion Kampfeswut are a very great sounding ambient and medieval folk influenced black metal duo and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Der Ruf der Berggeister" "Gesang von Sternenlichten" and "Polenlieder". 8 out of 10.
